Betsy has premiered new single 'Wanted More', which is available today via Warner Brothers UK/Columbia Records US. This follows the success of debut EP 'Fair' and breakout recent single 'Lost & Found', which picked up support across Radio 1, Radio 2, 6Music and went top 5 in Spotify’s UK & US Viral Charts. Having opened for Rationale around the UK and played a quickly-sold-out headline show at Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen, Betsy will play an intimate headline show at The Courtyard Theatre on November 15th.
"Wanted More," Betsy writes with characteristic frankness, "is about a model I dated. Beautiful but devious. His distant behaviour all made sense later when I discovered the swine was married." The result is an anthem for the wronged party in a relationship, effortlessly pairing soulful brass and soaring vocals with more electronic, euphoric dance influences (or Dusty Springfield and Annie Lennox on one hand, and The Source or Blueboy on the other).
Confessional and cathartic, 'Wanted More' digs deeper still into Betsy's unlikely musical background. She was born on a goose farm in rural Wales, finding her voice from campfire sing-alongs and the local eisteddfod (where she boldly covered Rage Against The Machine) to the powerhouse vocalists within her parents’ vintage record collection. Keen to pursue a career in music - but knowing nobody in the industry - she was encouraged by her hard-working family to find a fall-back, and moved to London to study fashion design at Central St Martins. One distraction led to another when Betsy was invited to design catwalk for the esteemed Balenciaga in Paris: an intense, exhilarating experience filled with fascinating characters (perhaps introduced in 'Wanted More'), but one that ultimately ate into her songwriting. And so Betsy returned to Wales, swapping what many of her peers deemed the job of a lifetime for a grotty caravan in her brother’s garden (which you can again see in the 'Wanted More' artwork).
Soon, there was no stopping her – Betsy furiously set about making music again, teaching herself the art of GarageBand and essentially challenging herself to write her way out of the caravan. People got an early glimpse via a collaboration with Joe Goddard of Hot Chip, who reworked Betsy’s early solo demo of ‘Endless Love’ into the pair’s acclaimed single. The caravan’s door was then firmly kicked down by ‘Fair’ - which felt as inspired by the final throes of a toxic relationship as the “trashy-opulence” of David Lynch - and then 'Lost & Found' (with its depiction of a love that makes your skin crawl). Blowing up these vulnerable, intimate moments into widescreen and empowering pop, 'Wanted More' confirms Betsy as one of the year's stand-out new voices.
We GENUINELY are obsessed with BETSY and this is such a gorgeous record. THERE ARE REMIXES COMING VERY SOON TOO but for now please make sure you are on the case for this amazing track from a truly stunning talent!
