Bastille make their much anticipated Virgin Records debut with the release of Overjoyed as a single on 30th April. After announcing 2 nights at Hoxton Hall, London, both gigs sold out in twenty minutes, and a third headline show at The Scala goes on sale this week.
The hauntingly rhythmic and stripped back glitchy, skippy noir ballad will feature remixes by Yeasayer, Distance and Ghostwriter. Overjoyed will be available digitally and on 7" with fan favourite SleepSong as a B side.
Bastille began as an alternative identity for Dan Smith and as a vehicle for his numerous ideas. Dan went on to further the Bastille project as a four piece live band and sold out London's Barfly, 93 Feet East and Underbelly at the end of last year.
The first Bastille single Flaws/Icarus was released on Young & Lost on July 4th last year, and sold out on pre-order. The homemade Flaws video has to date more than 275,000 views on Youtube and has spawned hundreds of covers from fans around the world.
Why Bastille? You could say Dan chose it because it connotes revolution and change, but really it's just because his birthday falls on Bastille Day and he wanted something neutral yet evocative enough to describe his rhythmically and melodically inventive pop music. And, as he says, "It's anonymous and it allows me the freedom to do whatever I want." Oh, and because he didn't want to trade as Dan Smith: troubadour.
Bastille's debut album is scheduled for release on Virgin Records later this year.
