Feeling increasingly gloomy about the state of the world, legendary DJ Jon Pleased Wimmin has created a much-needed moment of musical optimism. The result is his new single ‘European Love’, a soaring, shimmering anthem that’s both a respite from reality and a tribute to our friends in Europe. It couldn’t have come at a better time, and on a theme of love and unity, it is also being released on 28th June to coincide with Pride in London.
Throughout the 1990s, Jon’s euphoric sets and flamboyant performances were the stuff of legend, winning him a Top 10 placement in DJ magazines ‘100 Best DJs’ in 1996. His 3-piece cabaret act ‘The Pleased Wimmin’ were spotted performing at Kinky Gerlinky by Danny & Jenni Rampling, who immediately invited them to be dancers at their club Glam at the Milk Bar. This led to Jon being offered a summer warm-up slot with Danny in Ibiza. An immediate hit with the crowd, requests for guest slots came in thick and fast and he became a regular fixture at clubs nationwide such as Puscha, Venus, Fabric, Back To Basics, Miss Moneypennies, Slam, Pacha, Space, Ministry of Sound, Cream, Club for Life and Renaissance to name but a few. Jon also ran his own club night ‘Pleased’ in London’s Velvet Underground club for several years, a raucous weekly sell-out that attracted both celebrities and hardcore clubbers alike.
Since then, Jon has remained in high demand, travelling the world to DJ, releasing singles and remixing other people’s. He does exactly the same to this day, playing alongside the likes of fellow DJ royalty Pete Tong, Roger Sanchez, 2ManyDJs, Boy George and Erol Alkan. Recent remixes have included U2, Paloma Faith and Soft Cell.
Jon says about his new single, “With European Love I wanted to make a club track that melded house and elements of the Italo Disco / Eurobeat / Hi-NRG that I loved so much in the days before house became so prevalent. It's a big part of my musical heritage and it seems apt just now to pay respect to those influences. Uplifting and energetic is the order of the day. Long Live Europe!”
‘European Love’ is the debut release on the brand new Chemical Alley imprint on 28 June, featuring remixes by Allan McIntyre, Robot 84, Wow & Flutter, plus an Italo power-piano mix by Jon himself. Already getting road-tested in UK and European clubs and beyond, watch clubbers feel the European love this summer…
