What Shall We Do With The "Drunken Sailor"

Friday 1st October 2021

Release date: Out now Label: Tenwest

The Wellermen, supergroup of bass vocalists who were discovered during the viral Sea Shanty trend, team up with folk veterans The Longest Johns to release heartfelt new single ‘One More Pull’, a trad. Maritime shanty. It’s also the first taste of a soon to be announced album from The Wellermen.

Both groups are dedicated to maintaining the authenticity of these traditional folk songs and paying homage to the music of the UKs deep maritime history, rather than a pop-remix. ‘One More Pull’ is a relatively recent shanty about unity and togetherness, apt for the final push back to normality after the Covid-19 pandemic.

Hailing from both the UK & US, The Wellermen is made up of members Bobby Waters, Jonny Stewart, Luke Taylor and Sam Pope, all whose lives were changed when they dueted with a seemingly innocuous ‘Sea Shanty’ (Wellerman), on TikTok.

Since the release of the now ubiquitous TikTok, it’s been viewed over 10 million times across multiple platforms  and continents, and has seen The Wellermen appear at events like The Brits, shows like Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Take Away, Last Week Tonight With John Oliver and The Colbert Show.

It’s been an absolute pleasure to collaborate with The Longest John’s on this track. As the world seems to be approaching the end of Covid restrictions, it seems fitting for us to release a song with such a rallying spirit,” say the group.
Bristol based The Longest Johns are mainstays within the international folk scene, having performed sea shanties before the viral trend on TikTok. In a few short years they’ve gone from singing in their kitchens to festivals, tours and TV appearances, whilst also building a huge online following.
